    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Manuel H. P. Companaris (ASN: 0-2007028), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 April 1945, in the vicinity of Triensbach, Germany. While advancing in open terrain under heavy enemy machine gun, small arms and artillery fire, Lieutenant Companaris was slightly wounded. He continued to move his platoon in the attack until seriously hit by enemy artillery fire. Lieutenant Companaris remained at his position and issued complete instructions before allowing himself to be evacuated. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Lieutenant Companaris reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Manuel H. P. Companaris (ASN: 0-2007028), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Kressbach, Germany. Lieutenant Companaris led his platoon through intense enemy machine gun and small arms fire and personally attacked a machine gun nest, destroying two of the enemy with a hand grenade. This allowed the rest of the company to advance and the objective was taken as the result of this action. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire Lieutenant Companaris reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
