    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Herbert Behrens (ASN: 12111048), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 13 March 1945, in the vicinity of Bubingen, Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Behrens accompanied an assault platoon to maintain radio communication with the battalion commander. After being held up by machine gun fire and repulsing three enemy counterattacks, the platoon was ordered to withdraw. In his withdrawal, Technician Fifth Grade Behrens encountered a wounded man, administered first aid, and after remaining alone with him for nine hours, led him to safety under cover of darkness. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Technician Fifth Grade Behrens reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
