Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 136 (May 5, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William H. Golden (ASN: 0-1014125), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 753d Tank Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Buchhof, Germany. While supporting an attack on hostile forces entrenched on high ground overlooking Buchhof, Lieutenant Golden, leading his platoon, encountered a gully. Dismounting under intense enemy fire, he chose a route for crossing. While successfully crossing the gully, the gun tube was filled with mud. Again Lieutenant Golden dismounted under direct mortar, artillery and machine gun fire and cleaned the tube. Advancing up a hill toward the enemy, his tank was disabled by enemy anti-tank fire and began to burn. Lieutenant Golden ordered his crew to evacuate and seek cover. While running to another tank to continue the attack, he was killed by enemy small arms fire. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Lieutenant Golden reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
