The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] Jacob E. Gandler (ASN: 0-926244), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 February 1945, in the vicinity of Kunheim, France. Lieutenant Gandler proceeded into an unswept, uncharted mine field to rescue a wounded soldier. After carrying the soldier to a safe area, he secured assistance to move him to a nearby vehicle for transportation to an aid station. Upon reaching the vehicle, intense enemy machine gun fire caused Lieutenant Gandler and his men to leave the wounded soldier on the vehicle to take cover. Lieutenant Gandler, realizing the wounded man was completely exposed, moved to him under machine gun fire and again carried him to safety. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Lieutenant Gandler reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
