The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John M. Johnston (ASN: 0-54856), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 7 March 1945, in the vicinity of Gudingen, Germany. During an attack on the enemy when two of his men had entered a minefield and were wounded, Lieutenant Johnston attempted to enter the field himself to give aid to the wounded men. He had successfully reached one man when he stepped on a mine and lost both legs. When assistance arrived, he attempted to direct relief through a clear area. Lieutenant Johnston’s actions reflect great credit upon himself and are commensurate with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
