The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert E. Potter (ASN: 0-1185779), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 862d Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action from 7 March 1945 to 19 March 1945, in the vicinity of Sarreguemines, France. While serving as a forward observer, Lieutenant Potter constantly sought the best possible observation, regardless of being under direct enemy observation and hostile fire on many occasions. His diligence and perseverance materially aided in the successful execution of fire plans for various operations. He displayed exceptional qualities of leadership and was an inspiration to all with whom he worked. At all times his actions were exemplary of the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
