Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 3534 (December 21, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Kenneth L. Bratt, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Troop G, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Bratt distinguished himself on 19 May 1971 while serving as a gunner during contact with an unknown size enemy force near the city of Trang Bang, Republic of Vietnam. His vehicle was hit by enemy propelled rocket grenades, wounding the other crew members. Sergeant Bratt took it upon himself to assist the wounded men to safety. After his crew was helped out of the danger area, he mounted one of the other vehicles to assist in any way possible. During an ensuing assault, a Vietnamese Regional Force soldier was wounded. Sergeant Bratt carried the casualty out of the danger area. His courageous actions were directly responsible for saving the life of the Vietnamese Regional Force soldier and recovering the disabled vehicle. Sergeant Bratt’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
