Carpenter (ASN: 32943297), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 February 1945, in the vicinity of Ruersmacher, Germany. Sergeant Carpenter, with outstanding gallantry and in the face of enemy machine gun fire, single-handedly made a frontal attack on a house and threw a grenade into the window from which the machine gun fire was being delivered.
