The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Edward A. Ryan (ASN: 32740346), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery C, 863d Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 15 February 1945, in the vicinity of Bliesbrucken Woods, France. While his forward observer section was pinned down by enemy small arms and mortar fire, Technician Fifth Grade Ryan observed a wounded infantryman lying in a mine field exposed to enemy sniper fire. Technician Fifth Grade Ryan braved the sniper fire to assist the wounded man, but finding that he could not move him alone, secured assistance of an Aid Man who helped return the wounded soldier to safety. He then returned to his section for the remainder of the attack. His outstanding gallantry and regard for his fellow soldiers are in accord with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
