The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Souvenir W. Yonkers (ASN: 32806450), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 February 1945, in the vicinity of Neunkirch, France. Learning that the security of his platoon was greatly endangered by the position of an enemy machine gun emplacement to the rear, Sergeant Yonkers quickly picked up two men and led them in a ferocious assault on the machine gun nest, killing the gunners. His quick thinking and courageous action secured the position of his platoon, allowing them to take their objective. His utter disregard for personal safety and outstanding gallantry are in accord with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
