Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 117 (December 30, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Walter F. Quillin (ASN: 0-1165324), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 310th Field Artillery Battalion, 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 July 1944 in France. In order to more effectively direct artillery fire on an enemy weapon, Lieutenant Quillin, without regard for his own safety, moved into an exposed position in advance of the leading elements. He was severely wounded in the accomplishment of his mission but courageously continued to adjust fire until the enemy weapon was neutralized. His outstanding courage and gallantry under fire reflect the highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
