Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 2 (January 7, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank S. Leiby (ASN: 31329468), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, on 28 November 1944 in France. While he was carrying a field radio into the village of Batzendorff to establish a forward observation post, Private Leiby was fired upon by an enemy sniper. He returned the fire with his pistol without effect. He then secured an automatic weapon and killed the enemy rifleman. As he continued on into the village he was again fired upon by another concealed enemy rifleman. Private Leiby entered a building on the opposite side of the road, located the sniper and killed him. His gallant action eliminated danger to approaching friendly troops and enabled them to move into the village without incurring casualties. His dauntless courage and fidelity to duty reflect highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
