The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Robert W. Dearborn (ASN: 31221518), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, on 21 September 1944 in France. When two previous attempts to retrieve a rubber landing craft on the Meurthe River had been driven back by enemy small arms fire, Sergeant Dearborn led three volunteers down stream on the opposite bank from the enemy positions and, locating one of the boats caught in the debris of a blown bridge, he crawled over the ruins of the bridge while under constant small arms fire to recover the craft. Then, with the aid of the three waiting volunteers he succeeded in bringing it upstream to a point where it was used to ferry troops across the river. His indomitable courage and fearless devotion to duty under extreme hazard reflect highest credit on himself and the armed forces of the United States.
