McAnally (ASN: W-3155079), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Warrant Officer McAnally distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 27 May 1967, while serving as Aircraft Commander of a UH-1D lift helicopter, Troop B, 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) during a combat support mission near Duc Pho, Republic of Vietnam. When a friendly infantry platoon became pinned down by intense enemy automatic weapons fire and was critically in need of reinforcements and ammunition, Warrant Officer McAnally volunteered to re-supply the embattled unit. Upon approaching the area of contact, his aircraft became the target of enemy automatic weapons fire and received several hits, wounding Warrant Officer McAnally, his pilot, and one infantryman. Electing to remain airborne in an attempt to fly his crippled aircraft and casualties to a secure area, Warrant Officer McAnally landed his aircraft approximately 800 meters from the point of heavy enemy contact. Immediately upon landing he assumed command of the infantry squad on board his aircraft and established a defensive perimeter. After directing the medical evacuation of the seriously wounded infantryman, Warrant Officer McAnally, although wounded himself, chose to remain with his aircraft and crew. His presence of mind and quick reaction saved the lives of twelve soldiers. Warrant Officer McAnally’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
