When Marine pilot William Barnbanen was shot down on his 100th and final mission over North Korea, Charles Johnson (pilot) and John Withers (Medical Technician) flew deep into enemy territory to rescue the downed airman. Both were awarded the Silver Star for their actions.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Airman Second Class John D. Withers (AFSN: AF-15275193), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a Medical Technician on a Rescue Helicopter of the 3d Air Rescue Squadron, FIFTH Air Force, in operations in Korea, in 1952. Airman Second Class Withers accompanied the pilot of his unarmed rescue helicopter far beyond enemy lines to recover a downed Marine Corps pilot. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Airman Second Class Withers, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
