Headquarters, 15th Air Force, General Orders No. 268 (April 23, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Air Corps) William A. Miller (ASN: 0-438443), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action while serving as Pilot of a B-24 Liberator Bomber of the 723d Bombardment Squadron, 450th Bombardment Group (Heavy), FIFTEENTH Air Force. On 23 February 1944, Major Miller was participating in an exceptionally dangerous mission against enemy factories and installations in Austria. En route to the target the formation encountered determined and pressing attacks by approximately fifty interceptors. Without the protection of fighter escort, Major Miller tightened the formation into a perfect pattern of concentrated fire power and continued on course to the initial point, heading directly to the target where aggressive attacks were made on the formation by enemy aircraft in formations of six abreast in coordination with other attacks from all directions. In spite of heavy opposition, Major Miller gallantly continued on the bombing run until forced out of the formation and was last seen in a steep uncontrollable dive, still heading into the target area. As Squadron Commander, Major Miller had established an outstanding record by the excellence and proficiency of his leadership in combat. By his gallantry, outstanding leadership and undaunted courage, he has reflected great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States of America.
