    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Hansel W. Turley, Jr. (AFSN: FV-2228236), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an F-105 Pilot over North Vietnam on 21 June 1966. On that date, Major Turley flew his F-105 in support of a combat mission on a petroleum storage depot deep in hostile territory. Despite intense hostile ground fire, surface-to-air missile threats and MiG aircraft over the target, Major Turley pressed his attack to score direct hits on the petroleum storage tanks. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Turley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Hansel W. Turley, Jr. (AFSN: FV-2228236), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Combat Strike Pilot over Southeast Asia on 1 February 1965. On that date, while leading a flight of four F-105 Thunderchiefs in support of a rescue effort, Captain Turley, at great personal risk, attacked and destroyed well-emplaced gun positions that were directing heavy and accurate fire at the rescue aircraft. Making timely and correct decisions and using his precise knowledge of the complex F-105 aircraft, he then assisted his wingman whose aircraft had been heavily damaged in the attack, to a safe recovery at his home base. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Turley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Captain Hansel W. Turley, Jr. (AFSN: FV-2228236), United States Air Force, for meritorious service as Assistant Operations Officer, Strike Planning Officer and a combat strike pilot while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing armed force from 15 January 1965 to 30 October 1965. During this period, the leadership, exemplary foresight, and unceasing efforts of Captain Turley resulted in significantly great contributions to the effectiveness and success of the United States Air Force tactical air operations against communist insurgency in Southeast Asia. Captain Turley’s rigid personal discipline, influence upon crew reliability and combat potential were dominant factors in the sustained mission capability of his unit. The exemplary leadership, personal endeavor, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Turley in these responsible positions reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Hansel W. Turley, Jr. (AFSN: FV-2228236), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force while serving with the 13th Tactical Fighter Squadron over North Vietnam, on 10 September 1966. On that date, Major Turley in a flight of four Thunderchiefs, struck against a heavily defended target deep in his assigned hostile territory. Major Turley continued his attack despite numerous hits on his aircraft causing a drain of precious fuel deep in hostile territory. He demonstrated heroism of the highest order and destructive professional airmanship as he directed his damaged aircraft against the target and proceeded to assist other damaged aircraft and his flight to a safe recovery at an emergency field. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Major Turley has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

On that date, Major Turley was the pilot of an F-105 Thunderchief tasked to destroy the petroleum, oil, and lubricant storage area near Hanoi. Despite intense hostile ground fire, deadly surface-to-air missiles, and hostile MiG aircraft over the target, Major Turley pressed his attack to score direct hits on the petroleum storage tanks. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Major Turley reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
