After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, Osmond Ritland transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. He retired in 1965 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.

Ritland, United States Army Air Forces, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while serving as a test pilot at Wright Field, Ohio, from 1939 to 1944. In this important assignment, Lieutenant Colonel Ritland was closely associated with and responsible for development of programs to carry out engineering, flight performance and functional testing of the majority of American aircraft altitudes during World War II.
