Headquarters, Allied Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, General Orders No. 41 (August 26, 1942)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private] Olus Elwood Price (ASN: 6292828), United States Army Air Forces, for a singularly meritorious act of essential service while serving as Side Gunner of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the 435th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy), 19th Bombardment Group (Heavy), Far East Air Force, in aerial operations in the Southwest Pacific Area, in action over Rabaul, New Britain, on 19 June 1942. Sergeant Price’s B-17E airplane was attacked by fourteen Zero aircraft. His coolness and deliberate fire were instrumental in keeping his side of the plane clear of the enemy. During the action, he shot down one enemy fighter in flames. The courage displayed by Sergeant Price on all missions has been worthy of the highest standards of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
