    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major (Air Corps) Harry G. Mumford (ASN: 0-413481), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight while leading a Combat Wing of B-17 airplanes on a bombing mission over Germany on 30 November 1943. Due to extremely adverse weather conditions, the entire task force with the exception of Major Mumford’s Wing returned to England after proceeding only a short distance over the English Channel. Displaying courage, determination and complete devotion to duty, Major Mumford continued to lead his one unit on towards the target and aided by friendly fighter support, successfully fought off repeated attacks by enemy aircraft. On reaching the assigned target, the Groups under his command bombed important enemy installations with a high degree of success. Major Mumford’s accomplishment of his assigned mission against odds that appeared overwhelming, reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.

    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Harry G. Mumford (ASN: 0-413481), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber of the EIGHTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the European Theater of Operations during World War II. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Mumford, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
