The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Air Corps) William Hendrickson, Jr. (ASN: 0-112713), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action during a heavy bombardment mission of the EIGHTH Air Force over Germany, 28 September 1944. On this date, Captain Hendrickson served as Waist Gunner of a B-17 aircraft to better acquaint himself with the problems coincident with his ground duties of Gunnery Officer. Over the target a direct flak burst damaged the plane and started a fierce fire in the bomb-bay. With utter disregard for his personal safety, Captain Hendrickson secured a fire extinguisher and with flak bursting on all sides, attempted to bring the fire under control Even after the bail-out signal was given he continued to fight the rapidly spreading flames, abandoning the plane, which exploded a few seconds later, only after the crew was clear. Captain Hendrickson’s heroic and gallant action delayed the explosion of the aircraft and was directly responsible for the safe return of the entire crew. The courage, flying skill, and unyielding fighting spirit displayed by Captain Hendrickson are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Army Air Forces.
