The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Air Corps) Weymouth Crowell (ASN: 0-740756), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a B-25 Mitchell Bomber with the 448th Bombardment Squadron, 321st Bombardment Group (Medium), 12th Air Force, in aerial operations over Italy, on 17 April 1944. Captain Crowell led the 27-plane formation over the target, although his own plane had been badly damaged by antiaircraft fire, and enabled the bombers to heavily bomb the target. He drew away from the target after the bombing and two of his men parachuted to safety before the bomber crashed and exploded in enemy territory. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Crowell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
