The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Air Corps) William G. Coleman (ASN: 0-411964), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt Fighter Airplane of the 405th Fighter Group, NINTH Air Force, in aerial operations over the ***** Peninsula on 28 July 1944. While leading a squadron of P-47 type aircraft on two armed reconnaissance missions, Major Coleman demonstrated extraordinary tactical proficiency and fearless leadership in repeatedly attacking a great number of heavily defended enemy vehicles attempting to retreat from the Allied ground forces. He personally remained in the area of the attempted withdrawal until further aircraft were dispatched to the vicinity and by his outstanding courage in the face of enemy fire, as well as his aerial skill, he was instrumental in effecting the destruction of a large amount of enemy material. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Coleman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
