The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Flight Officer Barlow Dean Brown (ASN: T-120971), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Co-Pilot of a B-17 airplane of the EIGHTH Air Force, on a bombing mission over Germany on 26 July 1943. On approaching the coast of Germany, the airplane was attacked and severely damaged by a large force of enemy fighter planes. The top turret guns were disabled, the nose guns knocked out, the pilot seriously wounded and the wings riddled by .20-mm cannon fire. In spite of all this, Flight officer Brown took command of the plane and courageously continued on to the target and successfully bombed it. Enemy fighters again attacked on the return trip home but Flight Officer Brown skillfully evaded them and returned his badly damaged plane to a friendly base. The courage, skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Flight Officer Brown on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service. Occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
