Thomas White graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1920. After serving in the Army Air Forces in World War II, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force when it became a separate branch of service in 1947. From 1953 to 1957 he served as the 4th Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force, and from 1957 to 1961 served as Chief of Staff of the Air Force. He retired in 1961 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
