Richard Lawson enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard reaching the rank of Sergeant Major before being called to active duty. He was commissioned in 1951 in the U.S. Air Force, and completed his training in 1953. He retired in 1986 as a U.S. Air Force 4-Star General.
