Bruce Holloway graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1937. During World War II, he became a U.S. Army Air Forces DOUBLE ACE, credited with shooting down 13 enemy aircraft in aerial combat. After the war he transferred to the new U.S. Air Force, serving as the 10th Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force from 1966 to 1968, before retiring in 1972 as a U.S. Air Force General.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Air Corps) Bruce Keener Holloway (ASN: 0-20664), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a Fighter Airplane and as Commanding Officer of the 23d Fighter Group, FOURTEENTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations, on 22 September 1942. On that date, Lieutenant Colonel Holloway spotted enemy traffic moving up the Burma road. Returning to his base, he volunteered to lead a flight the same day and, under heavy anti-aircraft fire aided in the destruction of a score of trucks. Although his plane was hit several times, he continued his strafing tactics until a faltering motor forced him to head for friendly territory. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Lieutenant Colonel Holloway, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
