During World War II John Giraudo flew B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator bombers until his aircraft was shot down and he was taken as a Prisoner of War on February 25, 1944. He was held at Stalag Luft 1 in Barth-Vogelsang, Prussia, until he was liberated in April 1945. During the Korean War he was Commander of the 25th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, 51st Fighter Interceptor Wing from November 1952 until he was shot down and AGAIN taken as a Prisoner of War in May 1953. During this time, he was credited with destroying 2 enemy aircraft in aerial combat plus 1.5 probables and 1 damaged. One of very few men in history to suffer as a Prisoner of War in two different wars, he retired in 1977 as a U.S. Air Force Major General.
