John Phillips graduated from LaSalle Academy in Provident, Rhode Islands, where he was a member of the Rhode Island “All State” Cross Country Team in 1947. He subsequently graduated from Boston University in 1952 and was commissioned in the Marine Corps. He retired as a United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General.
