Carol Mutter was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1967 after graduating from the University of Northern Colorado and upon completing the Woman Officer Basic Course. When she was appointed a Marine Corps Lieutenant General on September 1, 1996, she became the first Woman Marine to ever reach three-star rank. She retired as a United States Marine Corps Lieutenant General in 1999.
