John Miller attended Texas A&M university before enlisting in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1943. He attained the rank of staff sergeant prior to his release from active duty in 1946 and his return to Texas A&M to complete his degree and graduate in 1949. He was commissioned in the Marine Corps upon graduation, and subsequently retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General.
