Samuel Helland entered military service in the U.S. Army in 1968, serving three years with the U.S. Army Special Forces including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He graduated from the Marine Officer Candidate School in 1973 and subsequently retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant General.
