The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Major Max Berueffy, Jr. (MCSN: 0-9065), United States Marine Corps, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States while serving with the FIRST Marine Division during operations against the enemy in Korea from 1 September 1952 to 18 July 1953. Serving as an Executive Officer and later as Commanding Officer of an Artillery Battalion, Major Berueffy displayed an outstanding degree of professional competence and fearless leadership in the execution of his duties. While serving as Executive Officer, his thorough knowledge of artillery, sound judgment and diligent application coordinated all staff sections in such a manner as to sustain maximum efficiency. His determined efforts resulted in outstanding improvement of the administrative, supply and mortar transport sections which contributed materially to the successful accomplishment of the battalion’s assigned mission. While serving as Commanding Officer, he consistently displayed outstanding skill and competence in the operation of his battalion. A most capable and inspiring officer, he maintained continuous artillery support to ground elements. His meticulous attention to detail and exceptional tactical abilities contributed materially to the success of ground operations. Major Berueffy’s exemplary conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Major Berueffy is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
