The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Charles J. Restivo, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty. Warrant Officer Restivo distinguished himself while serving as an Aircraft Commander on a UH-1D helicopter performing a combat assault mission in the vicinity of Phu Cuong, Republic of Vietnam. During the second lift in landing zone number 2, his ship came under intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Despite the increasing volume of fire, he elected to continue into the landing zone and, as his aircraft landed, it was hit rendering it almost helpless. With the lift complete, he commanded his crippled aircraft out of the landing zone and to a secure area where it was found that the aircraft was unflyable. Realizing the urgency of the mission, he made the decision to continue, and his stricken ship rejoined the flight to make several more lifts. Warrant Officer Restivo’s determination, professional ability, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect the highest amount of credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
