The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Glen A. Melton, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Melton distinguished himself while commanding a helicopter ambulance during a rescue operation in the Song Cau area. Responding to an urgent request to evacuate a seriously wounded allied soldier, Captain Melton flew his helicopter to the embattled area. As the captain brought his air ambulance to a hover above the high-rising jungle foliage and lowered the extraction hoist to receive the wounded soldier, his aircraft came under intense enemy fire. Captain Melton chose to remain in that vulnerable position until the casualty was safely aboard. Then, the captain executed an evasive tactical departure and proceeded to rear medical facilities. Captain Melton’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
