    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Philip Arthur Gamache, United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a Fighter Plane in Composite Spotting Squadron TWO, attached to the U.S.S. FANSHAW BAY, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Nansei Shoto Area, from 23 April to 4 May 1945. Completing his twentieth mission during this period, Lieutenant Gamache contributed materially to the success of his squadron and to the infliction of damage on enemy installations. His courage and devotion to duty in the face of enemy antiaircraft fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
