The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Chief Warrant Officer Two (CW-2) John R. Fuller, Jr., United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with Troop B, 3d Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry, on 6 May 1968. Chief Warrant Officer Fuller distinguished himself while serving as fire team lead of a team of armed UH.-1C helicopters providing close air support for ground forces at Bao Trai. A friendly outpost was under attack by the enemy and as Chief Warrant Officer Fuller engaged the enemy he received heavy fire from three 12.7 millimeter anti-aircraft guns. He exposed himself to the deadly fire in order to locate the exact positions by the muzzle flashes. He then pressed such a vicious attack on the enemy positions that two of the anti-aircraft guns were destroyed and the third was silenced. As a result of his dauntless courage the attack on the outpost was repulsed and thirty eight of the enemy killed. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
