The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Melvin L. Davis, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight. First Lieutenant Davis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 26 February 1966 while serving as pilot of an 0-1D aircraft in support of a ground combat operation near Ba Lang, Republic of Vietnam. When a Vietnamese force attacked a heavily defended Viet Cong position, the fanatical Viet Cong launched a counter-attack which forced the friendly force to withdraw. During the confusion of the withdrawal, one Australian and three American advisors were separated from the main body. After requesting aid, the advisors protected themselves with their limited fire power. First Lieutenant Davis arrived when the Viet Cong force had moved to within fifty meters of the beleaguered advisors. Although repeatedly exposed to the Viet Cong fire, First Lieutenant Davis rendered suppressive rocket fire on the insurgents. His skillful and heroic flying maneuvers so completely disorganized the Viet Cong that they abandoned their attempt to overrun the four advisors. First Lieutenant Davis’ heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United Sates Army.
