The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Sergeant Arthur L. Charlton, III, United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Helicopter Mechanic on an HH-43B near Vinh Thanh, Republic of Vietnam, on 11 December 1968. On that date, Sergeant Charlton successfully hoisted four critically wounded soldiers from a hostile area. Sergeant Charlton’s calm and professional performance of his duties, repeatedly exposing himself to intense hostile fire, was of primary importance in the successful accomplishment of the mission. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Charlton reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
