The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain David B. Bradley, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, Captain Bradley distinguished himself by heroic actions on 1 August 1967, while serving as pilot of an observation helicopter supporting the 2d Battalion, 12th Infantry, in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning the 2d Battalion, 125h Infantry was subjected to enemy mortar fire and a ground attack. During the action a soldier of the 2d Battalion became separated from his unit. After daybreak the lost soldier was spotted in a small clearing in the jungle, 500 meters north of the battalion’s positions. Enemy forces had withdrawn to the north and were believed to be in the area of the lost soldier. Realizing the threat to the soldier’s life, Captain Bradley, without regard for his personal safety, landed his unarmed helicopter in the small unsecured clearing and picked up the lost man. Through his personal courage Captain Bradley saved the man from certain capture or death. Captain Bradley’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
