    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Fred Hopewell, United States Marine Corps, for meritorious achievement in connection with combat operations as the Deputy and Operations Officer, Assistant Chief of Staff, G-6, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM 04-06 from May 2005 to March 2006. Throughout this period Lieutenant Colonel Hopewell was instrumental in maintaining and improving one of the largest, most capable command, control, communication, and computer architectures in Marine Corps history. He oversaw the planning and establishment of critical command, control, communication, and computer equipment and systems to support the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) team throughout the area of operations. His extraordinary performance of duties and mastery of battlefield geometry was essential to the Multi National Force-West Commander’s ability to command and control forces in combat and in security and stability operations in the Al Anbar Province of Western Iraq. Noteworthy was his oversight of the logistics support wide area network implementation; the Marine Corps first ever tactical employment of this capability. Furthermore, his tremendous technical expertise and aggressive approach to establishing communications greatly enhanced the combat command and control abilities of the II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward)’s major subordinate commanders in an area of responsibility covering 120,000 square miles. Lieutenant Colonel Hopewell’s total effectiveness, forceful leadership, and loyal devotion to duty reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
