The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant John C. Bradley (MCSN: 0-33496), United States Marine Corps, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life during the period 27 August 945 to 18 September 1945, when he served as Executive Officer of a humanitarian team which parachuted into the Bakli Bay area of Hainan Island, off the South Coast of China, with the mission of locating Allied prisoners of war and internees, of bringing to them medical care, food and protection, and arranging for their evacuation. Prior to the mission, because of the remoteness of the island, it was impossible to foresee what reception the team might receive upon landing. At Bakli the team located four hundred Allied prisoners of war, two hundred of whom were rapidly dying of beri-beri, malnutrition, tuberculosis, and malaria. Acting with tact and firmness the team forced the antagonistic Japanese to provide all possible Japanese medical equipment and personnel for administering to the sick Australian and Dutch internees. With the aid of the Chinese the team moved the sick from their inadequate housing to permanent clean buildings at Asnya, where Lieutenant Bradley aided in organizing and administering a two hundred bed hospital to care for the sick internees. Lieutenant Bradley’s heroic action in voluntarily risking his life to bring safety, comfort, and aid to Allied prisoners of war reflects great credit upon himself and on the Armed Forces of the United States.
