The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Matthew Pilatic (MCSN: 445959), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as acting platoon leader serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 16 March 1945. With his platoon pinned down by shattering rifle fire emanating from a rocky cliff during the perilous advance against a fanatic, determined enemy, Sergeant Pilatic unhesitatingly risked his life to wipe out the entrenchment and fearlessly proceeding alone to the mouth of the cave, hurled a hand grenade into the opening to silence the fire and destroy the occupants. Fatally struck down by a sudden shell burst, while returning to his platoon, Sergeant Pilatic, by his daring initiative, forceful leadership and extreme courage in the face of grave danger had served as an inspiration to his comrades and contributed materially to the success of our forces in capturing this vital hostile stronghold. His valiant devotion to duty throughout the fierce engagement reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
