The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert Tozier Noyes (MCSN: 853440), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifle Group Leader of a platoon of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese-held Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 27 February 1945. When his platoon was halted in its advance by an enemy bunker between the platoon and its objective, Private First Class Noyes voluntarily braved the heavy fire from the bunker and additional hostile fire which was being received from other points, went forward alone to launch a single handed assault on the Japanese position, and personally neutralized the position with rifle fire and hand grenades, killing all the enemy occupants. His heroic act enabled his platoon to advance to its objective, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
