The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Samuel J. Jeeter (MCSN: 457902), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Rifle Group of Company K, Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 12 March 1945. Determined to rescue four wounded Marines who were trapped in a draw under heavy mortar and machine-gun fire, Corporal Jeeter, disregarding grave personal danger from surrounding enemy snipers, repeatedly entered the dangerous area and carried the four wounded men, one by one, to friendly lines until all four were evacuated. His bold initiative, cool courage and self-sacrificing spirit on behalf of his fallen comrades reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Jeeter and the United States Naval Service.
