The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Irwin D. Ginsberg (MCSN: 472453), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a rifle Platoon Runner, serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jim, Volcano Islands on 27 February 1945. Observing the desperate plight of his advancing platoon, pinned down by the merciless fire of the enemy and reduced in strength by many casualties, Private First Class Ginsberg volunteered to deliver urgently needed medical supplies to the wounded men after word was passed down the line that no corpsmen were present. Crossing open terrain raked by enemy fire, he reached a point from which the supplies could be retrieved before sustaining mortal wounds. By his prompt actions, courage and devotion to duty, Private First Class Ginsberg was responsible for saving the lives of several of his comrades and his heroic conduct upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
