The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Raphael D. Clark (MCSN: 522485), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Radio Operator while serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 19 February 1945. Despite severe wounds received during the initial landing on Iwo Jima, Private First Class Clark refused to be evacuated and lying on the beach under terrific enemy fire kept communications uninterrupted by the skillful and efficient operation of his equipment. Remaining steadfast at his post of duty until he lost consciousness Private First Class Clark aided essentially in effecting the successful landing of assault troops on the beach and in expediting their advance across the island. His outstanding technical ability, fortitude, and resolute devotion to duty at great risk to his own life were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
