The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Staff Sergeant Colin Doyle Ainslie (MCSN: 533734), United States Marine Corps, for heroism in rescuing a Marine flyer from being burned to death on 17 April 1945, during the amphibious operation against Okinawa Shima. After observing the pilot, enveloped in the flames of his burning clothes, stagger from his plane, he, without hesitation and with complete disregard of exploding ammunition and gasoline fires, rushed to the aid of the flyer, extinguished the flames, and carried him to a place of safety. His outstanding courage, aggressive initiative, and devotion to duty was an inspiration to all. His heroic conduct performed in the face of great danger to himself, was outstanding.
