The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Terry E. Williams (MCSN: 2325376), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Squad Leader Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 18 March 1968, during Operation FORD, Corporal Williams’ unit came under intense enemy automatic weapons, recoilless rifle, B-40 rocket and mortar fire, pinning down the entire company. Reacting instantly, he unhesitatingly maneuvered to within twenty meters of an enemy position and, disregarding the heavy volume of enemy fire around him, boldly stood up and assaulted the emplacement as he fired his rifle and threw hand grenades. Aware that two more enemy positions remained and were halting his unit’s advance, he maneuvered to an area approximately fifteen meters from the hostile emplacements where single-handed, he launched an accurate grenade attack, destroying the positions and capturing an enemy automatic weapon. His aggressive fighting spirit and bold initiative undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades and enabled his unit to continue its advance. By his courage, steadfast determination and selfless devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Corporal Williams upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
