The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Herolin T. Simmons (MCSN: 1900256), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Rein.), FMF, in the vicinity of Co Bi Thanh Tan, Vietnam on 26 Mary 1966. While his company was reinforcing a unit that had engaged an estimated Viet Cong platoon, fighting from heavily camouflaged positions, Sergeant Simmons was assigned the mission of recovering dead and wounded Marines from in front of a concealed enemy position. Exposing himself to enemy fire, he crossed the danger zone to distract the enemy from his men who were recovering the fallen Marines. At this point it became apparent that the dangerous enemy positions had to be eliminated in order to save the lives of more of his men. Once again heroically exposing himself to the enemy fire, he rallied his men in a courageous assault which routed the enemy from their positions and finally eliminated them. By his daring initiative, cool courage and valiant fighting spirit, Sergeant Simmons served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
